100 Years of Hagerstown’s Aviation Industry to be Celebrated at Wings & Wheels Expo 2016

(Hagerstown, MD) – Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Hagerstown’s Aviation Industry at Wings & Wheels Expo 2016 on Saturday, October 1 from 9am to 4pm at the main terminal area of the Hagerstown Regional Airport on Showalter Road. This free event will be a great day for the whole family to visit the airport and learn more about Hagerstown’s aviation past, present and future.

Rare Hagerstown Aviation Artifact to be unveiled at Wings & Wheels!

One hundred years ago Giuseppi Bellanca designed, built and tested the Bellanca CD, Hagerstown’s first manufactured aircraft, and, by doing so, unknowingly began a century of aviation innovation and production. This 1916 Bellanca CD biplane was built in a factory building on Pope Ave. in Hagerstown and was test flown from a field which is now the South Hagerstown High School Athletic Field.

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum has discovered and acquired the fuselage of one of these rare early Bellanca aircraft and will feature it for the first time in a special 100th Anniversary exhibit at the Wings and Wheels Expo.

The Wings and Wheels Expo features a large display of Fairchild aircraft built in Hagerstown as well as warbirds, modern aircraft, classic cars, trucks, RC model aircraft, airplane rides, live music and food.

The Hagerstown Regional Airport Open House will include displays from airport businesses, airport maintenance and firefighting equipment exhibits and private aircraft displays.

The Hagerstown Aviation Museum has received donations of more than 20 historic aircraft, most of them built in Hagerstown, MD at Fairchild Aircraft. Many of these aircraft will be on display and open to the public. Visitors can walk through the museum’s 1948 Fairchild C-82 Packet and 1953 Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar and discover the fascinating story of Hagerstown’s exciting 100 year aviation history. Other museum aircraft such as the 1943 Fairchild PT-19 WWII trainer and the 1928 Kreider-Reisner KR-31 biplane will be on display along with privately owned Fairchild aircraft. Museum merchandise, books, DVDs, shirts, hats and toys will be for sale. A special 100th Anniversary t-shirt will be available to purchase. All visitors will receive a free 14" x 28" color poster of the museum aircraft collection.

Visitors can step back in time and experience a memorable flight in the museum's 1943 Fairchild PT-19 Primary Trainer! Thousands of allied pilots earned their wings during WWII in this historic aircraft built by Fairchild Aircraft seventy years ago in Hagerstown, Maryland. By making a $100 donation, visitors can experience the thrill of open cockpit flying.

The Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 36 will make available to youth ages 8 to 17 free airplane rides throughout the day. Pilots and aircraft owners donate planes, fuel and time to make these free Young Eagle flights possible.

Other organizations, such as the Civil Air Patrol, will have exhibits and aircraft on display.

The National Capitol Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force will attend and display a WWII TBM Avenger torpedo bomber.

The Berlin Airlift Historical Foundation’s 1945 Douglas C-54 “Spirit of Freedom” will be on display and open for tours of exhibits on the Berlin Airlift of 1948.

The Air Heritage Museum’s Fairchild C-123K “Thunder Pig” will fly in around 10 am making several passes, land, and then be open for tours.

The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics display will provide visitors with information about career training opportunities.

Radio controlled model airplanes will be on display.
